Treatment of Pterygium

What is a Pterygium?

A pterygium is a triangular membrane which usually starts growing from the inner side of the eye onto the transparent cornea.  It can become quite large and fleshy in appearance.  If left untreated it can continue to grow so far that it covers the pupil and renders the patient blind.

What are the causes of a pterygium?

The main cause of pterygium is not fully understood.  However, there are many aggravating factors such as dust, dry air, wind and most important of all, the sun's ultraviolet rays.

What are the symptoms of a pterygium?

The complaint heard most often from patients with a pterygium is the cosmetic effect of a red eye due to the growth and problems with dry or tearing eyes as well as sensations of burning and scratching.  A pterygium can also cause the vision to decrease before it has grown over the pupil by causing distortion of the corneal surface, and so inducing astigmatism.

what is the best treatment for a pterygium?

In the initial stage eyedrops are often the treatment of choice along with preventative measures such as sunglasses and avoiding too much sun.  If the pterygium becomes bigger or causes more discomfort, it can be surgically removed.  It is important to seek early treatment.  If you believe you have a pterygium contact Kerrville Eye Center, P.A. for an appointment.
